The Geotechnical Division of the HKIE was formed in 1987 but our history can be traced back to 1980 when the Geotechnical Group (the former body of the Geotechnical Division) was formed within the HKIE. We are a learned society to promote the status of geotechnical engineers in society. We organise technical talks, site vists, annual seminars and international conferences to facilitate the exchange of knowledge and experience. We place emphasis on developing and nurturing our young members to become geotechnical professional experts.
Geotechnical Engineering is a specialist branch of civil engineering with expertise in dealing with the ground, in particular soil and rock. It incorporates the
knowledge and skills associated with geomorphology, engineering geology, hydrogeology, geo-environmental engineering, geophysics, soil mechanics, foundation
engineering, seismology and ground treatment.
In many infrastructure and building developments, the planning, design and construction of them requires considerations
in many aspects in getoechnical engineering. Geotechnical engineers in Hong Kong have significant contribution to the
success of this city, given the steep hilly terrain, challenging geological ground conditions and substantial urban developments
in Hong Kong
