The Chairman's Message>
It is a great honour and responsibility to take up Chairmanship of the HKIE Geotechnical Division for the 2018-19 term.
As an industry, we are entering a period of rapid change, with the uptake of digital technologies presenting opportunities to deliver construction projects in new and exciting ways. The Geotechnical Division looks forward to promoting digital approaches that will allow the industry to deliver projects more safely, with better quality, cost and time surety. We will actively promote the use of digital approaches and virtual construction tools that will energise geotechnical engineers, and encourage the brightest minds to enter the profession.
We look forward to actively supporting moves for greater off-site construction, automation and broader innovation, by promoting industry dialogue and through sharing of best practice. Local and international speakers will be invited to share their experience and overseas visits will be arranged to expose geotechnical engineers to alternative delivery approaches and industry practices.
The safety performance of our industry is a concern for all. As a division, we are committed to playing our part in supporting design for safety, to engineer-out risks, and thereby contribute to improved industry safety standards. There will be particular focus on temporary works, which are almost always safety critical, as well as design for off-site manufacture and robotics to reduce on-site labour intensities in geotechnical works.
In two decades in the construction industry in Hong Kong, I have never felt such a momentum for change as I feel now. It truly is an exciting time to be a member of the construction community. The HKIE Geotechnical Division Committee looks forward to serving members and the wider geotechnical community through the 2018-2019 term, building on the excellent work of the outgoing committee, serving to the best of our ability.
